Our history

YTF's history is the story of a union that grew from the grassroots in the Norwegian transport sector. For more than 70 years, we have developed in step with the industry, but have kept the same starting point: to stand close to those we represent.

The history of the Norwegian Bus Workers' Union (YTF) dates back to 1955, when bus drivers from all over the country gathered around the goal of establishing their own union that could protect their interests. The background was difficult working conditions, low wages and little influence for those working in the bus industry. Despite resistance, the initiators were adamant about the need for a separate organization. The result was the Norwegian Bus Workers' Union (NRAF), which marked the start of what would later become the YTF.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the union grew as Norwegian transport developed. NRAF became a clear voice in the working world, both in wage negotiations and in the work to ensure orderly conditions, a better working environment and professional standards in the industry. During this period, key collective agreements were concluded that helped to raise the status of the profession. At the same time, the union built a solid organization with committed shop stewards throughout the country.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the transport sector changed its character. With technological developments, new framework conditions and a changing market, the membership base became broader and more complex. Over time, the union also included professional groups in freight, logistics, taxi, rail and administrative roles. NRAF therefore developed into a modern, cross-sector union and took the name Yrkestrafikkforbundet.

Since then, YTF has been a key player in Norwegian working life. We have been involved in demanding negotiations, important political processes and major structural changes in the labor market. We have worked for professional certificates, competence development, seriousness in the industry and better quality in tender processes, while at the same time being a stable and responsible party in the dialogue with authorities and employers.

Today, YTF represents more than 13,500 members throughout the transport and logistics sector.

The association is built on over 70 years of professional insight, commitment and unity, and we actively use this experience in dealing with an industry that is developing rapidly and where requirements for safety, competence, the environment and technology are constantly changing the framework for working life.

The starting point for this experience lies in the establishment in 1955, when the bus workers broke away and formed their own union because they needed an organization that took them seriously. This legacy has shaped us through generations and taught YTF to be courageous in the face of change, close in our relationship with our members and trustworthy in the way we act. Our history is therefore not just a retrospective, but an active part of the foundation for how we work today.
