YTF warns against removing benefits for chiropractic treatment

Yrkestrafikkforbundet are critical of the proposal to abolish the National Insurance benefit for chiropractic treatment, and point to negative consequences for transport workers.

The proposal involves repealing Section 5-9 of the National Insurance Act and thus discontinuing benefits for examination and treatment by a chiropractor. The amendment follows up on Prop. 39 L (2024–2025), which proposes savings of NOK 128 million in 2025.

Yrkestrafikkforbundet organizes over 13,000 members in the transport industry, including drivers and warehouse workers who are exposed to significant stress on their musculoskeletal system on a daily basis. The union is concerned about the consequences for its members.

YTF believes that the discontinuation could lead to more and longer sick leave, reduced work capacity and lower quality of life. The association points out that chiropractors play an important role in both the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, especially for drivers and warehouse workers with sedentary work and heavy lifting.

Prop. 39 L points out that physical therapy can replace chiropractic treatment. YTF emphasizes that physical therapy and chiropractic have different approaches, and that chiropractic treatment is often necessary for rapid pain relief and improved function.

Although the government estimates savings of NOK 128 million, YTF that the discontinuation could lead to increased societal costs related to sick leave and disability benefits. In 2023, 397,000 patients received reimbursement for chiropractic treatment, which shows a significant need for the service.
