Today, the new European Parliament met for the first time, but in her accession declaration, President Ursula von der Leyen did not mention the challenges related to social dumping or the need for a fairer working life.
At the same time, the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF), the European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW), and the European Federation of Trade Unions in the Food, Agriculture, and Tourism sectors (EFFAT) organised a large-scale demonstration outside the Parliament. Unions from all over Europe took part to demand fair working conditions and the right to permanent employment.
Although Norwegian workers in some areas have better protection than their European colleagues, the challenges of permanent employment requirements and the use of subcontractors are also an important issue in Norway, especially in the transport sector. Yrkestrafikkforbundet ( YTF ), represented by union leader Jim Klungnes and general secretary Linda Jæger, were present during the demonstration to express their support.
Our main requirements include:
Limiting subcontracting chains: Reduce the use of subcontractors, especially for core activities, and set clear limits on the number of levels in subcontracting chains.
Regulation of employment agencies: Stricter regulation of employment agencies and measures to close loopholes in the Temporary Agency Work Directive are needed.
Strengthened enforcement: Effective enforcement, with more inspections and stricter sanctions, is essential to ensure fair treatment and combat labor crime.
Ensuring equal treatment: All employees, regardless of employment status, shall have the same rights, pay conditions and working conditions in the same workplace.
