YTF warns against general exemption from driving rights in closed areas

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has submitted a proposal for a change to the driving license regulations for consultation. The consultation concerns, among other things, the introduction of a general exemption from the requirement for a driving license when driving on closed company areas.

Yrkestrafikkforbundet points out that the current exemption scheme was intended as a temporary solution. The scheme required employees to obtain the necessary driving license within a limited period. The union believes that this intention should still be the basis.

YTF stresses that regular driver training is important. The training provides drivers with the necessary skills in vehicle handling, emergency situations, maneuvering and load securing. This is crucial for safe operation, even in confined areas.

The association points out that heavy vehicles pose a significant risk of injury. This risk also applies where the area is physically cordoned off. YTF is concerned that a general exemption will lead to lower levels of training and greater variation in safety standards.

YTF warns against placing the main responsibility for training and skills tests on the individual employer. This could lead to different practices and weaken road safety. The union calls for a thorough assessment of the consequences before the regulations are changed.
